[Poetry] A Life Lesson

They say people don’t change.

But I’ve learned that sometimes, people do change,
And sometimes, they don’t change back
And sometimes, you have to move on,
Because you can’t spend your life waiting for them to change back,

Sometimes, the only thing you can do
Is pick up the memories you once shared
And make something beautiful out of them.

Day 27 of NaPoWriMo, off prompt today.

Muse & I took a weekend off because Life insisted, and now we’re playing catch-up with the prompts again. We’re probably going to stick to the prompts from here on out, but for today, this is a little something I scribbled because it’s been jostling around in my mind, and I’m not even sure if it counts as poetry, to be honest.

  1. Off prompt, catching up, life happening and still you have written a poem so real and so raw (yes, dear, it’s poetic). Change is constant, that’s life’s biggest irony. And sometimes its not for the better. I feel the pain beneath the simple yet beautifully written words. ❤

  2. That last stanza!!! So true! I couldn’t agree more with you, Jade. But in a way, isn’t it amazing how we can turn those broken promises, shattered dreams, and cracked hearts into a beautiful artwork?

  3. Wow, well said! Very true, it’s sad but a fact people do change but sometimes it’s because of there circumstance, background, culture, experiences, so many things are factors for change. So I wouldn’t say people who change are changing only for themselves it might be societies or their situations cause too…. Anyways great poem as always, but this was more straightforward and added curiosity, loved it! ❤

  4. I like this because it is very concrete, simple and true. I can feel your feelings behind it. Perhaps it’s from personal experience? People can choose to change, although I feel they are subject to their flaws still. But if someone has decided to change and won’t change back, you can’t make them. “You can only pick up the memories they shared / And make something beautiful of them.” Beautiful end lines. Sad though, many people keep trying to change each other instead of creating something new with the memories, new memories. Someone who fits you better. Just my thoughts. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you so much for your insightful and thought-provoking comment, Mandi! You were right in guessing that is from personal experience. Just the past catching up to me lately, that’s all.

I agree with you. I think too many of us focus on changing the people around us to fit the molds we think they should be in, instead of appreciating and loving them for the people that they are, flaws and are. And I also think too many of us hold on to the past, for good or bad, instead of letting it go and moving forward.
