Isn’t it crazy how something as simple
As a pen and ink and paper and words
Can turn reality upside down
And make the silence be heard?
Isn’t it crazy how something as finite
As words and paper and ink and a pen
Can immortalize most anything
And make it last until the end?

It’s the scent of pheromones and freshly mown grass –
The day we met on the high school tracks.
It’s the scent of saltwater in the August air –
The day you braided sea shells in my hair.
It’s the scent of tears, acrid and bitter –
The day I watched you walk away with her.

Goblins and ghouls and witches galore!
Asking for treats with smiles at the door.
Fairies with wings and superheroes with capes,
That Superman looks like he stole his mother’s drapes!
Snacking on chocolates and my favorite sour candies,
Running past the spooky houses – watch out for the zombies!
Laughing and whispering, shh, a ghost can’t be seen,
Prepare your pumpkins, it’s Happy Halloween!
