[Poetry] An Elegy For Them

This poem…

Is for the child
Sprinting through the crimson streets
Tripping over the last breaths
Of her father

For the mother
Protecting her babies’ ears
From the piercing shrieks that echo
Long after the ashes settle

For the thousands of eyes
That look to the sky
Through acid and smoke
And never look back down.

Written for Day 3 of NaPoWriMo. It’s been a struggle getting the muse to cooperate lately, but tragedy always moves us both.

These words are also written for the devastating chemical attack that struck Syria.

As Maria so eloquently said, “For isn’t the scent of peace sweeter than war, and tears more priceless when of joy?”
