[Flash Fiction] For A Good Cause

The laboratory was quiet save for the soft whirring of a machine and the occasional squeaks of rats in a small cage. Racks of test tubes, flasks, and microscopes covered the workspaces. At one station, a laboratory technician adjusted the settings on an incubator, jotted it down on a clipboard, and passed it to his colleague who was poring over notes and notes of research.

At a different workstation, another technician gently lifted one of the rats out of the cage and prepared a syringe filled with a colored liquid.

Written for The Urban Spaceman’s 12 Months Of Writing! This month’s topic is animals. Last week, we wrote about pigs (of the Chinese zodiac) and Urban Spaceman decided to continue the zodiac theme and wrote a drabble about rats (the next animal in the cycle). So, I did the same! My drabble is also partly inspired by the current COVID-19 pandemic. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

  1. I’ve done some (only a very little) animal testing. They’re pretty good at being as ethical as possible.

At least it’s not the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, where they just took whatever, injected (poor) people with it, and saw what happened.
