[Poetry] Bridge

I’m standing on one side
Of a deep cavern with jagged spikes
While my dreams wait patiently on the other side
For me to build a bridge.

But I have no tools,
All I have are societal pressures
And familial expectations
Clawing at me from behind
Like nails on the chalkboard of my mind
Threatening to push me over the edge,

And the only thing I know for sure
Is I want so desperately to be with my dreams
But instead I’m alone, on the side where hope
Is even bleaker now than it first seemed.

I am closing in on my second year of trying to publish my debut poetry book “Glowstick”, and the frustration is very, very high. So many rejections from agents, literary magazines, and a particularly painful rejection from my dream publisher…which leaves me back here, to my words, which are all I have while I stare at a future writing career that doesn’t seem to be possible.

I don’t know where I’m going from here…the only thing I know for sure is my dreams are waiting for me. To my fellow creative souls and my fellow struggling humans, can you relate? Do you have any words of advice? Or a motivational Harry Potter meme?

  1. I’ve tried a bit to get my novel, The Mercury Dimension, represented – but it seems the market is, shall we say, hard to sift through. I gather there’s a networking element, but whoo boy do I suck at it enough that I can’t give any real advice.

  2. First, I’m sending you hugs Jade. You are one of bravest people that I have met here in WordPress and even with the down days, you never fail to see the good in simple things. Being able to write poems (hundreds) is already a win. Coming up with a manuscript more so. Don’t let the pressure get to you. I’d like to share this full quote from one of the world’s most famous adage,

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

Take your time to explore other possibilities, widen your options. Sometimes a no to something is a yes to another thing too. If you need to talk, I’m on chat away. ❤

    • Aww Maria, thank you for your support and your friendship. I’m so grateful that our paths crossed here in WordPress so many years ago, and look forward to the day our paths will cross in real life! Thank you for sharing that quote, which is such a helpful reminder. Yes, there is a door that’s opened, I just need to find it.

I send you a giant virtual hug back and much love from across the ocean. If you ever need a friend, you know I am always here for you too, Maria 💜
