“It’s okay to be a glowstick—sometimes we need to break before we shine.”~ Unknown
Glowstick‘s innovative storytelling spans 98 poems, narrating the speaker’s decline of mental health and eventual journey towards healing, acceptance, and recovery. Glowstick never paints a rosy picture where mental illness is miraculously cured. Instead, it guides the reader on a roller-coaster journey through darkness into a place of courage and light.
An excerpt from Glowstick‘s introduction:
“What if there were others living in limbo, fighting for balance? What if there were others who understood being strong didn’t mean we were invincible, but rather, it meant we felt our pain and chose to concentrate on the beauty within?
And what if someone was out there with a hole inside their chest they didn’t know how to fill, their only solution to lie in the dark and wait for the emptiness to end, as I still do from time to time?
What if I could help?”~ Jade M. Wong
Glowstick also provides an intimate window into mental illness and self-love from the Asian-American perspective, while keeping in mind that mental health and individuality remain topics still considered taboo in Asian-American culture. Through relatable language and emotional beats, Glowstick celebrates subtle strength, quiet resilience, and compassion, both for yourself and for others.
“Ultimately, the goal is to encourage readers to pass on the light, to be each other’s glowstick in the dark.”~ Jade M. Wong
